The art of conversation is something of an enigma to Caroline Wright.
Her work has explored both participatory and encountered conversations
and in Conversations with Friends she responds directly to
the face-to-face experience of person-to-person dialogue.
Over several years Caroline has been looking at the roles we adopt
during everyday verbal exchanges, challenging the boundaries of personal
space through her work and trying to manifest visually the physical
act of speaking. In Conversations with Friends, guests
are welcomed into the comfort of the family home and invited to
relax in an armchair as they strike up a conversation with the artist.
They can enjoy the ritual pleasantries on meeting a new acquaintance,
discussing the delights of everyday events and passing time over
the discourse of idle chatter.
During this meeting, Caroline will use her speaking mouth in an
attempt to record the conversation photographically asking her guests
to allow their portrait to be taken in a very intimate way. These
variable minute works will be shown on the home
website.
