In the last of the Space, Action, Location series at home, John Carson
presented an Xmas Special. This was an evening where art and entertainment
became confused in a performance featuring songs, stories, slide projections
and surprise items; all on a yuletide theme. All in all - an irreverent
look at the traditions, conventions and kitsch of Christmas, by someone
who is not afraid to talk turkey. Folks were asked to put their hands
on their hearts and in their stockings and consider what Christmas
really means to them.
The programme included:
• A critical look at the ‘art of the Christmas card’,
featuring prime
examples of the genre
• ‘Do-it-yourself’ Christmas carols with help
from the audience
• An examination of unsuitable present syndrome
• Christmas couture
• Things to do with holly
• Exploding fairy lights
• Jingling bells
• Snowmen, snowballs and a slushy seasonal singalong
John Carson has presented his pictures, stories and songs in theatres,
art galleries, music halls, pubs and parlours from Middlesborough
to Muskogee, from Mayo to Melbourne. He has been commissioned by
The Arts Council and BBC to make videos for television and presented
his own Wee Johnny Carson Show on Radio in Liverpool. From the media
and popular culture, he carefully selects and edits images, soundtracks
and well known songs, returning them in a new context to tell a
different story.
