One of Russia's leading performance artists,
Masha Chuykova returned to home to make a special performance to mark
the International Day of Women's Independence, which used to be widely
celebrated in the former Soviet Union. Cooking traditional Soviet
dishes for the audience from the former Soviet Republics, she dedicated
herself to polishing and washing the floors at home, by applying felt
to the underside of a pair of skis, and employing mops for sticks.
Masha Chuykova is a video and performance artist and curator of the
TV Gallery in Moscow. She has shown extensively in Russia and Europe
including food performances; 'Poor Supper', 'The Fight between Sweet
and Salt' and most recently 'Time of Soup'. Her performance 'The Collective
Memory of a Group of Patties' from the 'Alive Foodstuff' series, at
home in December 2000, set up a grown-up treasure hunt in the house.
Edible creatures made from fruit and vegetables were hidden amongst
the furniture and objects in the house, as well as traditional Russian
'Pelmeni' ravioli.
